FTP is the highest power in watts that you can sustain for about one hour in a steady state – without your performance dropping.
Put simply: if you ride as hard as you can for an hour without collapsing from exhaustion – that is your FTP. If your FTP is 250 watts, for example, you could theoretically average 250 watts for an hour.
What FTP really means
Behind the value lies a physiological concept: FTP is an approximation of your lactate threshold – the point at which your body switches from aerobic to anaerobic energy production.
The higher your FTP, the longer you can:
- ride at a conversational pace without getting tired
- climb faster
- hold a moderate pace over many hours
In short: FTP is a measure of your sustainable performance – not your short sprint, but what you can deliver over a longer period.
What is FTP used for?

Now the reality check: FTP is an approximation, not an exact science. The 20-minute test is a practical estimate, but not every rider truly reaches their one-hour maximum in the test. Pros also talk about "vanity FTP" – when someone inflates their value to look better in training.
And the most important message: FTP is only a snapshot of your current fitness – not a judgement about you as a rider. It is a tool for controlling training, measuring progress and pacing races better. Nothing more.
